چکیده

Abstract Relative contributions to the zonal mean meridional heat transport by climatological annual mean, variation, synoptic, intra‐seasonal and lower‐frequency motions were examined based on ERA‐Interim reanalysis data for period of 1981–2015. The analysed in this study only includes component related wind temperature. In tropics, circulations dominate long‐term transport, while interaction between temperature seasonal anomalous flow largely contributes variation transport. middle latitudes, transient eddies (mostly synoptic eddies) are roughly equal importance poleward leading maximum around 50°N/S. upper‐ lower‐tropospheric transports appear opposite, with magnitude being greater. preferred at 50°N is attributed low‐level southerly situ. peak latitude mid‐latitude near arises from combined effect strong synoptic‐scale variabilities situ their in‐phase relationship. tropical cyclones (TCs) was estimated applying a statistical relationship TC intensity vertically integrated averaged over core region derived high‐resolution Weather Research Forecasting (WRF) model simulations. For northern hemisphere summer, TCs contribute about 35% total active regions, suggesting that play critical role regional

What Determines Meridional Heat Transport in Climate Models?

The annual mean maximum meridional heat transport (MHTMAX) differs by approximately 20% among coupled climate models. The value of MHTMAX can be expressed as the difference between the equator-topole contrast in absorbed solar radiation (ASR*) and outgoing longwave radiation (OLR*). As an example, in the Northern Hemisphere observations, the extratropics (defined as the region with a net radiat...

Unipolar outflows and global meridional circulations in rotating accretion flows

Using two-dimensional simulations of non-radiative viscous rotating black hole accretion flows, we show that the flows with α ∼ 0.1 − 0.3 self-organize to form stationary unipolar or bipolar outflows accompanied by global meridional circulations. The required energy comes, with efficiency ∼ 0.001 − 0.01, from the matter directly accreted onto black hole. Observational implications are discussed.

Geostrophic Velocity Measurement Techniques for the Meridional Overturning Circulation and Meridional Heat Transport in the South Atlantic

Two ocean general circulation models are used to test the ability of geostrophic velocity measurement systems to observe the meridional overturning circulation (MOC) and meridional heat transport (MHT) in the South Atlantic. Model sampling experiments are conducted at five latitudes (between 158 and 34.58S) spanning the range of extratropical current regimes in the South Atlantic. Two methods o...
